Black & White Expression Mini Sessions: What to wear

The best part about these intimate heirloom sessions? How little planning you actually need to do to walk away with really beautiful photos of your kiddos.

The entire goal of these sessions is to let their little personalities shine in a simple, timeless way. Since each image is converted to black and white, details like freckles, lashes, curls, and expressions naturally take center stage—far more than whatever they’re wearing.

That said… I know the question is still coming:“Okay, but what in the world should they wear?”

So let’s talk about it.

My own girls make the perfect on-hand models, so I put together a few side-by-side examples to show you how different outfit choices can shift the overall feel of your images.

And first—let me say this clearly:There is no “wrong” choice here. Every option you’re seeing is adorable (I mean… I’m biased, but still 😏).

But if you look past the cuteness for just a second, you’ll notice how the overall vibe changes depending on what they’re wearing.

On the left, both girls are in more neutral options. Neither of these tops are actually white—they’re soft shades of pink—but once converted to black and white, they read as light, clean tones. We also skipped patterns and logos, which gives the images a more classic, timeless feel.

On the right, they’re both in patterned outfits. My youngest is wearing a black-based sweater (that actually has neon colors in real life), and my oldest is in a white and navy dress. These outfits translate with more contrast and visual interest, which can make the images feel a little more playful and relaxed.

Here’s the key difference:With patterned or bold outfits, your eye naturally shares attention between their outfit and their face. With simpler, neutral clothing, the focus leans more heavily toward their expressions—their eyes, their little features, all those tiny details you never want to forget.

Again—neither option is better than the other. It just depends on the feeling you want when you look back at these photos years from now.

I do suggest you do not dress your child in anything featuring logos. You want to make sure that if they are in a pattern it's not one that will inadvertently spend more time advertising for a company and not advertising how cute those cheeks on your kiddo are!

Remember colors don't matter, but shades do. Here are just a few examples:

He is wearing light gray.

She is wearing navy blue and white.

He is wearing bright yellow.

I can’t wait to see what your kiddo ends up wearing—but let’s be honest, it’s their personality that’s going to steal the whole show anyway.
