Why You Won’t Get Every Photo in Black & White (And Why That’s a Good Thing)

Why You Won’t Get Every Photo in Black & White (And Why That’s a Good Thing)

Let’s talk black and white photos—because I love them, and I get questions about them all the time.

“Do I get a black and white version of every image in my gallery?”

Short answer: Nope.

Long answer: Because black and white images deserve more intention than just slapping a filter on top.

I used to deliver both versions—color and black and white—for every image in a client’s gallery. But eventually, I realized it didn’t feel true to how I tell stories. Black and white isn’t just a filter—it’s a mood. It shifts the feeling of a photo. Some images? They shine in black and white. They feel gritty, raw, timeless. Others? Not so much. Especially beach sessions or certain park locations where color makes the photo.

When I finish editing your gallery, I take a step back, look at everything, and hand-pick which images are going to tell the strongest story in black and white. Sometimes that’s two images. Sometimes it’s half the gallery. Sometimes it’s none.

But here’s the best part:If there’s a photo you love and you wish it was in black and white—just ask me! I’ll create a custom version that’s edited with care. I’m not just stripping the color; I’m adjusting tones, contrast, and light to bring the photo to life in a new way. That’s why I beg you—please don’t just throw a black and white filter on your own. They’re masking the color, not telling the story.

True black and white editing is one of my favorite parts of delivering a gallery. It’s my quiet, artsy moment where I get to look at your images and say:“Where’s the magic? Where’s the emotion?”

So no, you won’t get every photo in black and white. But you will get the ones that matter in black and white. The ones that feel like memories.

And if you want more? Just say the word—I’ve got you.
