What to Expect at your maternity photo session

Maternity sessions are one of the most special kinds of shoots—there’s just something about the mix of excitement, anticipation, and love that makes these photos feel so meaningful. Whether it's your first baby or you're adding another little one to the crew, a maternity session is the perfect way to slow down and capture this moment before everything changes. Adding a new family member is the start of such a special new chapter for a family and it's such a sweet time to take photos and capture your changing family.

So what can you expect when it’s time to step in front of the camera?

I believe in creating a relaxed, go-with-the-flow experience! I have also been pregnant, and while you know you want photos to help capture this special time, it's also a bit awkward! You don't feel like yourself, and you don't really look like yourself so the idea of a photo session can be overwhelming. Don't worry though! A maternity session Is all about capturing connection—your hand on your bump, your partner’s quiet smile, the way your kiddo snuggles up to you. We'll pick a location that feels right (beach, park, your home—wherever you're most comfortable), and we'll let the moments unfold naturally. 

The most important thing to remember - during those last few weeks of your pregnancy, your mobility may not be at its highest! The location you chose will likely be impacted by this if you are doing maternity photos later in your pregnancy. Some of our Charleston locations are beautiful but do require a little bit of a walk. But don't worry if a walk isn't in the cards for you! There are so many beautiful locations that are just a few steps from where you can park your car in Charleston! We'll chat a bit about how your physically feeling, and make sure we find a location that will make sure you will be comfortable for the whole session.

What to wear?

Let’s keep it simple. Flowy dresses are always a favorite—they move beautifully in the wind and help show off your bump in the prettiest way. Soft colors, cozy textures, and anything you feel amazing in is the way to go. Neutral colors pair FABULOUSLY with the coastal beach photoshoots and bright colors look amazing in downtown! I’ll help guide you if you’re not sure where to start!

When to schedule?

The sweet spot is usually between 28–34 weeks. You’ve got that beautiful bump, but you’re still feeling comfortable enough to move around and enjoy the session. We want to catch that glow, not the “I’m over it” stage. 😉

And don't forget, we'll want to involve the whole family meaning Your partner, older siblings, and of course—even your dog—are welcome and encouraged to be part of the session. These photos tell your family’s story, and everyone deserves a place in them.

And most importantly—expect to feel all the feels.This isn’t just a photoshoot—it’s a way to honor everything this season holds. The calm before the chaos. The excitement of the unknown. The quiet joy of adding a new spirit to the family.
