We are Family: Youth Queer Prom 2025

This year’s Youth Queer Prom was nothing short of spectacular! It was hosted by We Are Family, an amazing organization dedicated to supporting LGBTQ+ youth based here In Charleston! The room was alive with color, creativity, and celebration. And trust me when I say- it was a sight to see!! Every detail was designed to make the night feel joyful, welcoming, and full of pride. From the moment you arrived, it was clear this wasn’t just any prom it was a night to let your true self shine and dance the night away.

I've been photographing the Adult Queer prom for a number of years, and the entire goal of that prom is to A. create a welcoming, fun space for everyone who wants to re-live their prom dreams and ( most importantly!!) B. Fundraise money that goes directly to creating support opportunities all year long. Plus throwing a totally awesome Queer Youth prom for all kids who don't feel authentically welcome at the traditional prom at their school. Every year I attend the Youth Prom I have such a good time just sitting back and watching the kids. We are Family has created such a wonderful community and being in a safe space for these kids, singing at the top of their lungs and just having fun is so special.

The decorations were a total dream. Bright, bold, and full of personality, every corner was thoughtfully styled to reflect the energy of the community it celebrated. There were whimsical photo ops with fun props, cozy lounge spaces, and a dance floor that stayed full all night long.

But what really made the night stand out were the activities. There was so much to do!!! Guests could decorate cookies, design their own bracelets, make custom hats, or even create DIY pride flags to wave proudly throughout the night. A popcorn bar added the perfect salty snack break, and the dessert table was stacked with the tastiest goodies you can imagine; sweet treats that were as festive as they were delicious.

There were also tables full of free goodies; pins, stickers, art supplies, and all kinds of colorful, expressive treasures to take home. Every activity encouraged creativity, self-expression, and connection, making the whole night feel like one big celebration of individuality and joy. Seeing a group of young people feeling so happy and full of light was truly the best to witness.

Youth Queer Prom 2024 was a beautiful reminder of the magic that happens when the community comes together to celebrate with intention, love, and a whole lot of glitter. Here's to more nights like this, where everyone is welcome, creativity thrives, and memories are made that last a lifetime.
